Alsace, 1918 - Lives after the war

2018 will be the final year of the commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The Écomusée d’Alsace’s Ordinary stories of an Alsatian family, 1914-1918 exhibition looks at the daily life of an Alsatian farming family in wartime (focus page 14), but another important question which needs examining is how life went on after the Armistice, especially in Alsace.

The answer is given in a special exhibition at the museum, which explores the life of families in the region between the end of the war in 1918 and the 1930s. It features a whole collection of objects and documents from the post-war period and a number of theme panels, looking at how soldiers were welcomed back, the burden of mourning, how women went about their lives, the shortage of food, and ethnic cleansing in Alsace. The exhibition also features biographical clips illustrating life both during and after the war.

The exhibition will help visitors gain a better understanding of the often-painful consequences of the war years.
