Charivari, the peasants’ carnival

To the sound of villagers and conscripts singing on their way to the bonfire, visitors join in a traditional carnival parade, which ends in the cremation of Dorothy, the doll symbolising winter. Before the ceremony, however, there is the Schnitzelbank competition, where people vie to come up with the best and wittiest texts and verses mocking authority and all forms of order and helping drive out the hardships and evil spirits of winter. The bonfire heats up what remains of the winter air to usher in the warmth of spring.
